What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas and "roids", are benign tumors that form in the muscular wall of the uterus. Their size can range from microscopic to several centimeters, and some women may have a single fibroid while others develop multiple.
Fibroids are classified by their location within the uterus:
- Intramural fibroids - Grow within the muscular wall of the uterus and are the most common type.
- Submucosal fibroids - Develop just beneath the uterine lining and can distort the shape of the cavity, often contributing to heavy menstrual bleeding.
- Subserosal fibroids - Project outward from the uterus and can press on nearby pelvic organs, leading to bloating or urinary urgency.
While the exact cause is not always clear, factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, and estrogen sensitivity can contribute to fibroid growth. Uterine Fibroid treatment can begin with Dr. Bahlani.
